It consist of Surgical increase the size (volume) and projection (size) of the Chin through the use of anatomical Chin implants or prosthesis, specially designed for that purpose.

The specific medical terms Mentoplasty and Genioplasty are used to refer the reduction and addition of material to a patient´s chin.

The Chin prosthesis has been developed for more than 20 years, obtaining a wide margin of clinic safety. Silicone chin Implants are one of the most commonly used implants for chin augmentation.

Also are available Polyethylene chin implants, brand name Medpor, Polytetrafluoroethylene chin Implants, brand name Gore-Tex, is used in Plastic Surgery and other operations, is known by an abbreviation of its chemical name: EPTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) or Gore S.A.M. (subcutaneous augmentation material), Acellular Dermal Matrix-ADM´s is another chin augmentation implant material.

Commercially known as AlloDerm and known by physicians as Acellular human cadaveric dermis, AlloDerm comes from tissues donors just after death, its main complication is the rejection.

Other implant materials include Supramid: a braided nonabsorbable synthetic suture material in polymer shell and Mersilene: a mesh-like material that provides a scaffold on the bone.

The main indication for operation is the lack of Chin volume (Chin Hypotrophy).

How the Chin Augmentation surgery is performed

The operation can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, usually the operation lasts about 2 hours and commonly it´s practiced on outcome basis

An incision is made either under the chin (external approach) or inside the lower lip (intra-oral approach), a pocket is made, and the implant (usually a silicon implant) is placed into the pocket.

Some chin implants are fixed to the mandible, while others are held in place by the pocket itself.

So, the Chin prosthesis is placed through intra-oral approach or external approach through surgical incision below the Chin, (I prefer intra-oral approach) placing the prothesis in the Chin region in subperiostical way, inside the pocket made, increasing the volume and projection of that anatomical area.

Possible Complications

Among the complications that can occur in a very small number of patients, are the following:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Dehiscence of the surgical incisions
  • Prosthesis Dislocation (ectopic location)
  • Capsular Contracture
  • Muscle contracture
  • Prosthesis Extrusion
  • Prosthesis rejection

However, with proper care and control, evolution tends to be very satisfactory.

The recovery is fast and painless, with satisfactory result. The patient should use oral antiseptics 3 times a day if the intra-oral approach was used.

The patients can make their normal lives after the first week, but must wait 8 weeks for exposure to the Sun, heat, go to beaches or physical exercises.

Without complications, the final result is excellent, permanent and very rewarding.
